Military Kids

Pentagon Channel Program Notes “Military Kids Serve, Too!”

A child's sentiment, “I Serve, Too,” is the subject and title of the Pentagon Channel's new half-hour documentary "Recon," which premiered November 24 and will be repeated throughout the holiday season on the cable channel. People who cannot access the channel through their cable companies can view it via the Pentagon Channel website (
http://www.pentagonchannel.mil/) by clicking the link for the “I Serve, Too” program.

The documentary notes that coping with family separation, fear for a parent and trying not to let their pain show are things many military children experience. There is a growing awareness of the challenges and special needs military kids have, particularly those of more isolated Guard and Reserve families. The documentary introduces viewers to a military family who experienced deployment to a war zone firsthand, and explores how the children in that family dealt with the painful reality. It also highlights programs that help children of deployed service members, such as NMFA’s Operation Purple Camps and the Sesame Street video, “Talk, Listen, Connect: Helping Families During Military Deployment,” available for download or order through Military OneSource (
http://www.militaryonesource.com/).

The program also provides insights from a child psychologist on the typical reaction of children with various ages to the deployment of their military parent and how parents can help their children.
